Charging port repair: phone will not charge

A loose cable, slow charging or no power at all is often down to the charging port. We check it in store and tell you the price first.

Charging port repair at GoImpulse starts from €20. We give the exact price after the diagnosis and before we start. For most models it takes about 30 minutes while you wait. Sometimes a clean is enough, so we check that first.

How to recognise it

  • The cable only charges in one position.
  • Charging is very slow or keeps cutting out.
  • The cable sits loosely and wobbles.
  • An iPhone says “liquid detected” though nothing got wet.
  • No charging even with another cable and charger.
  • Visible discolouration or green deposits in the port.

What we do

  1. Visual check: we look into the port and test cable and charger.
  2. Diagnosis: we establish whether it is dirt, contact damage or something else.
  3. Price up front: you hear the price before we work.
  4. Clean or replace: depending on the finding, we clean or replace the port.
  5. Charging test and payment: we test charging; you pay only after you agree.

Good to know

How the port is built

The port contains small contacts and retaining springs that hold the plug. This is similar for Lightning and USB-C: after hundreds of plug-ins the springs tire and grip loosens. The port is usually attached to a small flex cable with other parts, so on some models it is a separate part and on others part of a board module.

Lint and dirt

The most common cause is pocket lint packed into the port over time, which stops the plug seating fully. A dry, soft wooden or plastic tool often clears it. Do not use metal, which can damage the contacts, or anything damp, and switch the device off first.

Corrosion and moisture

If moisture gets in, contacts can corrode, showing as discolouration. Cleaning usually no longer helps and the port must be replaced. An iPhone “liquid detected” alert means voltage is sensed at the contacts where it should not be; dirt can trigger it too. Overriding the alert is not advisable, as charging while wet can speed up corrosion.
